Visiting the north island of New Zealand happens for most people as most will arrive in Auckland near the top of the North Island and begin their journey of New Zealand. If you can, head north to Northland including the Bay of Islands and Cape Reinga. In the heart of the North Island is Tongariro, a volcano, and one of the best one day walks in the world. Lord of the Rings fans will also recognise it as Mt Doom. With high amounts of geothermal activity and abundance of Maori culture, with Rotorua a particular highlight in this respect, it’s warmer weather also make visiting the north island of New Zealand a far better experience for the beach lover’s among you.
Scuba Diving is also a speciality here, with quality sites such as Poor Knights Islands, offering treats for the underwater adventurer. The North Island is where over 70% of Kiwi’s live so a lot of the cultural and social aspects of New Zealand are found here. While it may lack the quantity of eye candy the South Island has to offer, it still packs a huge punch and will give you a very different but equally awesome experience.
